MiniBoone: Major Boon

It’s four in the afternoon, so let’s talk about a show that’s happening in, like, three hours. Hey, why not? That’s how you roll, anyway. You fly by the seat of your pants. I mean, you won’t even have an idea of what you’re up to until you leave work, and that won’t be for another hour. So! This one comes in just in time, then. Oh, man.

It’s kind of appropriate that the first legit post on More Drive is about MiniBoone (speaking of that seat-of-the-pants feeling; more on that in a second), who were one of the first three or so still-kinda-under-the-radar local NYC bands I saw after I moved to Brooklyn, and the novelty hasn’t worn off. You’ve got the three dudes up front switching off on lead vocals and harmonizing with each other (loudly) and a frantic rhythm section in back; bombastic pop melodies; really smart counterpoint and rhythm from the guitars and keyboards; and a borderline punk rock level of energy. If they maintain this roll of regional gigging they’ve been on, I think your days of needing some blog-ass jerkwad to explain MiniBoone to you are numbered.

See this thing below all this text? That’s a Soundcloud thing which, if prompted, will play “The Other Summer,” from an upcoming MiniBoone seven-inch. Joint is epic. Oh, at first, you think you’ve got it pegged as a bouncy, classic-sounding I-IV-V number, complete with appropriately incremental notch-ups in volume and vocal register. But no. The ‘Boone boys proceed to lead us through a series of distinct passages, all tied together by an anthemic basher of a chorus which, right when you want it to not stop, won’t stop.

They’re playing tonight, Oct. 28, alongside Diehard and Gross Relations, at Shea Stadium. That’s the rad loft space in Brooklyn (20 Meadow St., specifically), not the demolished actual stadium in Queens. Starts at 7 p.m.

WordPress and Soundcloud are occasionally incompatible, so if you don’t see an embed, check out the track here.
